A videotaped statement by the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbaev, was also shown.

For Belgium, the Chairman of "EXPO 2017, Liege”, Robert Tollet, the Mayor of Liege, Willy Demeyer and the Director General of "EXPO 2017, Liege”, Jean-Christophe Peterkenne made the trip to Paris.

In their presentation the Belgians focused on the advantages of Liege. The Prime Minister of Belgium, Elio di Rupo, greeted the delegates of the BIE in a videotaped message. The Belgian Minister of Education, Marie-Dominique Simonet, also came to support the bid by Liege. They once again emphasized the economic stability of the country, its multi-ethnic character, the backing of other countries and international partners, and the enthusiasm of the Belgian people.

On behalf of the Government of Kazakhstan, Deputy Prime-Minister Kayrat Kelimbetov greeted the heads of delegations of the member states of the BIE.

- Organizing EXPO–2017 around the theme "Future Energy” follows logically from the global initiatives of our President to save the planet. While putting forward the theme "Future Energy” for EXPO-2017, we have taken all necessary steps to make sure that Kazakhstan moves forward towards the practical implementation of a green economy, - noted the Deputy Prime Minister.

- We will strive to make EXPO-2017 in Astana one of the most technologically advanced ever. Thus, Astana will resemble a kind of "City of the Future”. For us, EXPO-2017 will be a new phase in the economic life not only of Astana but of the country as a whole, and the theme "Future Energy” will mean a step towards preserving our planet for future generations.

K. Kelimbetov thanked all the heads of state, heads of diplomatic missions, the secretariat and the delegates of the BIE and all the participants who expressed their support for the bid by Astana. He also thanked the people and the government of Belgium for a fair and honest competition, which brought our two countries even closer together.

In his statement to the BIE delegates the Mayor of Astana, Imangali Tasmagambetov said: - We want to talk about what lies ahead. We want to say that the EXPO will expand its reach to cover a territory that is the 9th largest country in the world. The main mission of the EXPO after all, as is well known, is to be of planetary significance. Hence, the opportunity of holding the EXPO in our capital is a wonderful chance to develop and disseminate this global idea from the very heart of the Eurasian landmass. We aspire to, believe in and are capable of changing the world for the better! This is the real reason why Astana is taking part in this truly grandiose project.

The Mayor of Astana also highlighted the importance of the EXPO for our country: "Holding the EXPO will not only be a test of our abilities but an opportunity to prove to the international community that our city is a success, and is ready to tackle the most complex challenges. Time alone will tell whether today's decisions are the right ones. We in Kazakhstan are convinced that "Future Energy” is the right path forward.”

Then came the long awaited voting ceremony and everyone but the BIE delegates had to leave the room. Thirty agonizing minutes later the delegation of Kazakhstan walked back into the room and immediately saw the results displayed on the screen: 103 votes for Astana, 44 for Liege.

At that historic moment for all of Kazakhstan, people in Astana also awaited the results of the vote with bated breath. Young people from the capital gathered in front of the Media Center in Astana to show support for their country. As giant screens broadcast the ceremony live from Paris, the young let their joy show and chanted "EXPO Astana”.

Following the announcement of the results of the vote, an official reception was held in the ‘Gabriel’ pavilion in Paris, in honor of the country awarded the right to host EXPO-2017. At the start of the reception, the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbaev, spoke to those in attendance.

"I want to thank you once again for the decision to organize the EXPO-2017 exhibition in our young capital. I am grateful to all the heads of state and government for supporting our bid. I wish to in particular thank the people and the government of Belgium and of Liege for their fair play. We are fully cognizant of the historic responsibility that has been placed on our shoulders. For the first time ever the EXPO will be held in the very heart of the vast Eurasian landmass”, - said the Head of State.

He pledged that Kazakhstan would spare no effort to make sure that the exhibition meets the highest possible standards. "We will take in to account all of your suggestions, do our utmost to make sure the exhibition lives up to expectations”, - noted Nazarbaev and invited all those interested to visit Kazakhstan.

In concluding his speech the President switched to English. "Thank you for your support. It’s a great day for Kazakhstan”, - said Nursultan Nazarbaev.

November 22 became a decisive and historic day for independent Kazakhstan. From now one there will be a before and an after that day for all the people of Kazakhstan. 103 countries voted for the bid by Astana. This is a further endorsement of the policy conducted by the Government of Kazakhstan.

The "EXPO-2017” team now has a great deal of work ahead of it as it will now have to live up to the confidence expressed in its bid. The exhibition promises to be one of the most technologically advanced ever and by that time Astana will have rightly earned the nickname "City of the Future”.

www.expo2017astana.com

The investment into the new project is estimated by industry sources to sum up to not less than €1 bn. In the final phase Vnukovo Expo Center will have a maximum size of 249.000 sqm of covered hall space. Additionally a congress hall for 10.000 persons in the design of a Roman Colosseum will be built as well as a multifunctional hall of 5.000 sqm. The congress hall will be the largest of its kind in Moscow. The new venue has been designed by the leading German architects gmp Gerkan, Mark & Partner.

Krasnaya Presnya, the Moscow inner city venue, is said to continue operating and is currently being extended to 165.000 sqm. In the last years, Krasnaya Presnya had massive problems to fulfil all the space demand of the exhibiting industry. Annually, it hosts approximately 100 trade fairs of different size and importance with over 30.000 exhibitors participating, and offers nine modern exhibition pavilions and halls for conventions, press conferences, meetings and symposia.

The opening of the new ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre near Pulkovo Airport (first phase with around 40.000 sqm exhibition space, a congress centre, two hotels and a business centre) will take place in 2014. Meanwhile ExpoForum has acquired the portfolio of Lenexpo and leased the Lenexpo exhibition complex until the end of 2013. From 2012 on all shows will be held under the ExpoForum brand. The total investment of the venue project until 2018 (around 80.000 sqm of covered exhibition space) by Gazprom Bank is estimated at around US$ 1 bn.

The new Novosibirsk Expo Centre opened its doors on 31 January 2012 to start its activities with ITE's international building and interior exhibition "StroySib / SibBuild", taking place from 31 January to 17 February. The new centre is located at a site on the border of the city near to Tolmachevo airport. The total indoor exhibition space amounts to 54.500 sqm, outdoor space to 12.500 sqm and the conference halls to 1.500 sqm.
In 2012 over 100 trade fairs and exhibitions will be held at the new premises, for which the overall costs are estimated at more than 3 billion rubles.

http://www.exhibitionpilot.com

Want Innovation? Go to a Tradeshow

More than 2,700 companies display their best ideas to more than 140,000 visitors – reporters, buyers, investors and potential business partners – in several cavernous exhibit halls and hotels. No matter the reason, everyone who attends International CES has chosen to invest precious time and money. Their return is more than entertainment; it is business – and an awesome and inspiring display of the future.

They travel great distances to meet like-minded individuals and discuss the vibrancy, hope and promise of innovation. They come because in no other venue can a company make a profoundly physical statement to 5,000 reporters and analysts, and some 30,000 international business visitors. Yet the distances any one attendee travels to CES pales in comparison to what they would have to travel otherwise to accomplish the same business meetings: the average CES attendee has 12 meetings at the show, which means CES attendees save more than 700 million miles of flight in business trips that they otherwise would have to take.

They come to test the mettle of the people with whom they are doing business, to shake their hands, look in their eyes, and assess whether a company’s product matches a company’s hype. Perhaps most important, they come because relationships matter in business and, despite the worldwide reach of the Internet, a relationship cannot only be electronic. It must be personal.

This personal component to International CES – or any tradeshow, for that matter – is what makes it a living, breathing entity. It’s an experience that requires five senses. Some may scoff and wonder why in the age of technology and the Internet live face-to-face events even exist. Yet they not only persist, they also prosper because people, relationships and first-hand impressions matter. Five-sense interaction beats the Internet for creating a big picture view, allowing serendipitous discovery, developing trust, and evaluating people and products.

Bill Gates once told me that Microsoft was made by trade shows like CES. Indeed, every large company started as a small company that needed to attract investors, partners and customers quickly and efficiently. The best place to accomplish all three? At a tradeshow. Indeed, the entire CES is run with a basic principle: that anyone with an idea should be able to present it inexpensively. Companies and careers have been made at trade shows – and our world has been changed by them as well.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, which owns and produces CES, has a long line of volunteer chairmen whose companies got their big break at CES. Kathy Gornik, the co-founder of Thiel Audio, packed four days of food before driving to her first CES in 1976. Darrell Issa, now a member of Congress, built his car security company by attending CES shows, as did Loyd Ivey, who started MTX Audio in 1976 at the age of 26, and now operates the mega-company MTI. These giants of industry began as CES presenters who shared a passion for innovation and entrepreneurship and the belief that anyone with an idea should be able to expose it easily. Their leadership helped protect a sacred trust that CES must always serve as a platform for new innovators and entrepreneurs.

So we keep the flame lit. This year, CES added Eureka Park, which will provide almost 100 start-ups a special exhibition at the show. Since 2010 we have tripled the iLounge Pavilion space for third-party accessories and software for Apple’s iPod, iPhone and iPad products to 300 exhibitors.

Of course, CES isn’t the only event around. We also see tremendous innovation at other major U.S. trade shows, including AAPEX, BIO, CEDIA, CTIA, IMTS, InfoComm, ISC, NAB, NAMM, Pack Expo and SEMA. While these may seem to be indecipherable acronyms, each represents an event attracting thousands of businesses coming to see hundreds of cutting edge innovative exhibitors. These and other events are carrying our economy, creating jobs, making news, driving marketing and pushing us rapidly into the future.

Marketing executives at businesses across industry sectors understand the value of tradeshows. In a recent study conducted by the nonprofit organization Center for Exhibition Industry Research Foundation (CEIR), 99 percent of surveyed executives said exhibiting offers unique value not offered by other marketing channels. Business executives understand tradeshows’ importance, because exhibitions drive business. In another CEIR study conducted by Oxford Economics in 2010, findings uncover that each of the top exhibitions in the United States created, on average, $82 million in business-to-business sales among exhibitors and attendees.

The U.S. business-to-business exhibition industry is alive and well, and it offers companies a gateway to reaching their markets. The 2010 CEIR Census documents that there are approximately 9,000 business-to-business exhibitions in the United States. The CEIR Index estimates that approximately 1.5 million companies exhibited in 2011 and roughly 60 million people attended.

The power and purpose of tradeshows in our rapidly connected world continue to grow with each year. Far from being a relic of a bygone age, today’s trade show remains the premier event to learn, interact and maybe even strike a deal with America’s next generation of innovators. So get on a plane. Go to a tradeshow. Think outside the box. Be open to new ideas. And have a bit of fun along the way.

Gary Shapiro is president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the U.S. trade association representing more than 2,000 consumer electronics companies, and author of the New York Times bestselling book, "The Comeback: How Innovation Will Restore the American Dream.”

www.forbes.com
